The New Source-Connect 4.0

What Source-Connect 4.0 Will Mean for Studios

What is the new Source-Connect 4.0? Should I be using it for remote voice over recording sessions, or stick to Source-Connect 3.9? If you are a studio, yes, you should definitely get 4.0 (currently in Beta as of late 2024) as soon as you can. It is the future of Source-Connect. As a studio you can now connect to six participants. Your remote voice over talent will no longer need iLok or Port Mapping if they have 4.0. So, sessions will be much more stable and easier for connecting to. Source-Connect 4.0 is backwards-compatible to 3.9 and 3.8. However, there is a big condition to that. Restore/Replace, RTS, and the plugin for Source-Connect Link will not work between the 4 and 3 series.

Source-Connect will be more secure, and more robust. Source-Elements is transitioning to a subscription model, and the word is that their Source-Connect 3.9 will be retired as soon as 4.0 is fully adopted as the new industry standard. So if you’re a studio, joining the new Beta testing program and purchasing it is highly recommended. Note, I am in no way connected to, nor am I receiving any compensation from Source-Elements for my endorsement of it. I would just like the voice over industry to move forward.

Is it worth it for Voice Over Actors Yet?

If you’re a voice over actor and you only use Source-Connect 3.9 with a few studios, you won’t need to switch to 4.0 yet, unless you want to be part of the Beta program. If you do upgrade to 4.0, it is recommended to still have a 3.9 license since, as previously mentioned, the advanced features of 3.9 and 4.0 do not work between the versions. For voice over talents, you can read about how to get started with Source-Connect 4.0 here. You can also download the full Source-Connect 4 Talent Guide with this link.

If you’re a voice over actor who travels a lot, having 4.0 with the ability to connect easily without setting up iLok or Port Mapping will definitely be worth it. Also, the all-new Source-Connect 4.0 (read that in an announcer voice!) is a much nicer and easier to navigate interface, as seen below:

4.0 is Still Good old Source-Connect

Thankfully, Source-Connect 4.0 is still the good old Source-Connect and preserves its best features. They didn’t mess it up! As before, 4.0 supports various digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Pro Tools, Audition, Logic Pro, REAPER, and Cubase. Plus, it works with non-linear editing systems (NLEs) like Resolve, Digital Performer, among others for video synchronization.

Like earlier versions, version 4.0 uses the AAC ELDv2 codec from Fraunhofer.  This codec is superior to the Opus codec when working with sample rates of 48kHz and above. Opus only goes up to 48kHz, and is geared for better results at very low bit rates for streaming live dialogue, as opposed to high-quality recorded sessions.

On top of the new features mentioned before, there are additional features. It now streams MIDI alongside high-quality audio, enhancing remote music production capabilities. It also allows for discrete audio inputs and outputs for each participant in group sessions, simplifying audio routing.

Feedback so Far

Currently the new Source-Connect 4.0 is in Beta testing. It is that new! However, it is the product of years in development. It has been well-received by users and engineers who note improvements in connectivity, stability, latency, audio quality, and an improved interface. It was a winner at 2024 NAB Show Product of the Year Award in the Remote Production category. Expect it to become the new standard for remote recording in the near future.
